About Lee-Anne

Lee-Anne Boucher is the founder of Bridge for Families and brings extensive experience in family therapy, clinical supervision, and supporting families through challenging transitions.

Why I Became a Family & Couples Therapist

My path to becoming a family and couples therapist began long before I entered the field of psychotherapy. It began within my own family.

When I was young, one member of my family became seriously ill with a potentially terminal illness. Although one person was receiving professional support, the reality of what our family was living through affected all of us. My siblings and I each developed different ways of coping with the stress and uncertainty. Some of us fought, some withdrew or escaped, and some learned to keep the peace and care for others.

At the time, I didn’t have the language to understand what was happening. As I grew older and began working as a Child and Youth Worker, I started recognizing similar patterns in the children and youth I supported. I became increasingly curious about what was happening beneath the behaviour.

Rather than simply asking, “What is wrong with this child?” I began asking, “What is this child trying to communicate through their behaviour?”

That question became central to my work.

I went on to work with high-risk youth in group homes, where I saw these expressions of emotion at a much more intense level. I began helping other professionals understand the meaning behind the behaviours they were seeing and how a young person’s behaviour could be a reflection of what they were experiencing internally and within their relationships.

My career then expanded into education. For more than 15 years, I worked with children and youth with a wide range of learning styles and needs in a specialized private school. I supported students with autism, ADHD, giftedness, emotional dysregulation and other learning differences.

Being an educator allowed me to see something that became increasingly important to my understanding of people: there is rarely just one story in the room.

I came to know not only my students, but their parents, siblings and the dynamics within their families. I began to see the same pattern I had experienced in my own family years earlier: when one family member is struggling, the entire family system is affected. Each person may respond in their own way, developing different coping strategies, behaviours and ways of communicating their needs.

This understanding ultimately led me to pursue my Master’s degree in Psychotherapy, specializing in couples and family therapy.

Understanding the Whole Person

My background as an educator continues to shape the way I practice today. After more than 15 years of working with individuals with very different learning styles, strengths and challenges, I understand that there is no single way people experience, process or communicate the world around them.

People learn differently.
People communicate differently.
People cope differently.
And people express distress differently.

This is especially important when working with couples and families. I don’t see a person in isolation from the relationships and environment around them. I want to understand the person, their experiences, their relationships and the patterns that have developed between them.

My approach is rooted in curiosity rather than judgment. Behaviour is often communication, and understanding what is underneath that behaviour can be the beginning of meaningful change.

Healing happens within a circle of care.
